Worldwide Catamarans
Coronavirus "The Elephant in the room"!
Well as much as we all want to ignore this elephant and talk about positive things and happy sailing adventures, you can't but help come across it in you everyday life. It has affected most of the planet.
Maybe it has had some positive effects on our goals and aspirations. One wealthy business owner that has just purchased a catamaran through us was stressed, run down had no time to spend with his family made the decision to
shut up shop and take early retirement.
Now he is a changed man, tanned, happy and relaxed
living on his own little island in an amazing location at peace
with nature with his Wife and two children, doing what he
has always dreamed of and owning a catamaran. His
comments last week were "If this is self isolation
and quarantine then everyone should be doing it" Ha!
We are having many enquiries on the boats we have for
sale, and somehow by a lot of effort with PCR testing
people seem to be able to travel, people are getting to view.
Catamarans seem to be in more demand than ever however we keep getting offers for half the catamarans asking prices with buyers refusing to believe that resale values are holding steady in spite of the Pandemic. With some of the sellers instructing us not to put any offers to them unless they are realistic about the price. We seem to have to make twice as much effort for the same results, but that's ok.
VALUATIONS It does not do us any good for the same old boat stuck on our books for years being over priced, but these days putting a value on any yacht is not so easy as it used to be.We want you, the seller to sell it and you, the buyer to buy it, that's the only way we make any money, ha!
The formula for valuing a previously owned yacht was always based on the original factory invoice including all of the extras and options fitted with 10% devaluation in the first 12 months was 10% there on losing 5% per year for 10 years then prices would eventually level out and hold their value.
These day's all of this seems to have gone out of the window!
It is more of a case of what the Seller wants for the boat and what the buyer is prepared to pay for it.
Lagoons, Fountaine Pajot, should be reasonably easy to value, but there are so many factors. With these two manufacturers churning out on average over 800 boats a year of all different sizes it should be easy, but depends, a lot of ex charter boats being dumped on the market, hurricanes, Covid-19, all having an effect on resale, but not always bad, in fact Covid-19 is having a positive effect on resale believe it or not, catamarans are selling fast, production of new boats has slowed down to a trickle and deliveries of new models seem to be disappearing over the horizon and demand seems to be outstripping production.
It's as if catamarans have finally been discovered!
OLDER CATAMARANS
We sold a Fountaine Pajot Athena 38 for
20,000 Euro more than it cost new last
year, so why is this type of yacht holding
its value so well?
Again, many factors. It is said that they
don't build them like they used to. Sure
they maybe lighter and faster nowadays,
more spacious, but are they as safe or
strong enough to cope with big seas and
adverse conditions?
Many traditional sailors do not like the
new flybridge idea with the boom up high,
disturbing the balance and centre of
gravity especially on the smaller boats more
effected by this incidence. This is a reason why Lagoon seem to have introduced non flybridge models to their range once more.
It seems that more and more buyers rather than purchasing a shiny new designed catamaran are preferring to take one of the older models and completely rebuild it. Refitting with the latest tech, re gel-coating. The cost of fitting equipment plus paying for a new cat with all of the optional equipment puts most of these new models out of many peoples price range. How do you put a value on a boat like this, some that have been refurbished to even a better standard than the factory produced it?
The new models seem to have more issues of things going wrong than the older catamarans that have been well and truly sorted. If you do own an older model throw some money at it and look after it as you could end up doing the unthinkable in boat terms and make a profit on the re-sale!
More and more people are appreciating the true value.
WHAT IS A REASONABLE OFFER?
Traditionally a "reasonable offer" would be within 10% of the asking price, you can not blame any buyer for trying it on, but lets face it when your buying anything the price is always to high and when your selling it is always too low!
Why we play this game, I never know, but everyone normally has some "wiggle room" or room for negotiation attached to the price that they do not always tell their Broker! After dealing with many international both buyers and sellers, different nationalities have different ideas, so the "Wiggle Room" element is not always built in!
And careful as the owner has got attached to his old friend that has safely taken him and his family on many happy adventures and if you insult him with an unreasonable offer there is a chance that not will you only lose his goodwill, he may not even let you buy his boat. (It has happened not once, but several times)
Remember Charlie Brown you can often insult a mans Wife or Mother, but never insult his boat, ha!
UNKNOWN BRANDS / One offs / Custom builds
The major production builders such as Fountaine Pajot and Lagoon
have captured the cruising catamaran market by storm without doubt
and others targeting the performance catamaran buyers, such as
Nautitech, Catana, Outremer, and everyone seems to have heard of
Gunboat!
We could build you a custom built, faster, prettier, better catamaran
than all of the above for not a lot of difference in the price, but you
probably have not heard of the brand...
Rather than follow the crowd, what about these others, some faster,
more spacious and in all better built. You're not searching for them, may
have never heard of them......or even thought to include them in your search. If you know what you're searching for great, press the buttons on Yachtworld and no doubt your search will pop up, but if your trying to sell your boat and its not a known brand, you have a problem!
Thats where we come in......
We now have 25,000 followers on our "Catamarans For Sale" Facebook Group. Our World wide Catamarans page is growing daily and we have probably more people visiting our site for catamarans than some of the major portals. But one big problem is we do not have enough boats for sale so contact us if you want to sell..
UNUSUAL METHODS GET UNUSUAL RESULTS
For the last few years our business and I am sure that many
others including yours, if you had a business has changed from the day you opened shop.
Lets face it, the business world has been constantly changing due to influences beyond any of our control. What you could have got away with yesterday, you can not get away with today!
This is due to a number of drastic changes, not only Covid-19. The internet, Social Media, Online shopping.
We no longer have to travel from boat yard to boat yard looking at boats, we don't even pick up the phone! We can press a button and have a selection of boats on our screen in seconds all over the world.
Now in response to an enquiry, I send out pages of information via an e.mail and if I am lucky I get a two line response, is being a Yacht Broker a dying profession?
I do not get the chance to share with you my sparkling personality and hypnotise you into buying a catamaran with my trusting Yacht Brokers eyes!
I am stuck behind a desk answering enquiries from people who are probably sitting in front of their fire on a cold wet day with their lap top looking at boats and dreaming of better times, so they fire off a few enquiries on Yachtworld. (I've done that, ha! ) Many who I send the info too can't even remember, what boat they were enquiring about! Seriously, I would rather be out there sailing with you lot!
OK, let's adapt and evolve!
I have been told that I should be more professional by one of
these "Professional Yacht" Brokers". Because they belong to
an Association of Professional Yacht Brokers and have been
on a course, run by the Professional Yacht Brokers
Association. They have probably got a professional Yacht
Brokers badge. Oh! and you have to pay a subscription to be a
member of that association and pay to go on that course given
by a professional Yacht Broker. (OK, That is me the monkey on
the left above) It looks like to me if you have half the brain of a mallard duck, but can pay the joining fee the PYBA they let you join, ha! * (The BYBA is a fictional organisation made up in my own head and no slander or mistreatment of Mallard Ducks was implied or implemented in the making of this newsletter)
Every time we place an ad for a boat on Yachtworld for instance we have an influx of calls from young enthusiastic Brokers (wearing their PYBA badges) from all over the world contact us saying that they have a buyer for the advertised boat and would we mind sharing the commission 50/50. No problem, but we had been working on an 8% commission basis in Europe, but the US Brokers only want to work on a minimum of 5% or they will not work with us, so the customer loses a good boat because your Broker does not earn enough commission out of the deal and the Seller loses a Buyer and we lose our commission. (Nobody wins) Then we find a Buyer
There is a button that brokers press on Yachtworld to say if the boat is open to co-brokerage, we would love to stop pressing that button! And that's not because we want the lions share or to cut out other Brokers either.
We do work with a selected group of "nice" Brokers that we trust all over the world that we share our Co- Broker listings with, so yes, if you want to pay us the standard 10% "industry rate" we will distribute your boat for sale with our network of Brokers and we will still sell your boat faster.
Now, because we have had a good reputation within this industry for over 25 years I hope that we now have the clout to break away from this so called " professional" idea of selling boats!
Our Catamarans for SaleFacebook Group has over 25,000 followers our Newsletter Subscribers over 47,000. As we specialize in Catamarans we get as many visits to our site than some of the major portals for people looking to buy a catamaran and our Worldwide Catamarans Facebook page is growing in members every day.
WHY USE A BROKER ANYWAY?
These days with social media giving people access to advertising on the worldwide web, is there any need to use a broker and pay their extortionate commission rates??
With individual Facebook Groups and owners groups of your specific yacht it is easy to put your boat out there and wait for a bite..........
However, is it as easy as it looks?
Industry commission rates widely vary between 8 - 10% and no wonder most sellers do not want to pay it. But speaking as a Broker, I think your find we are worth it!
But hey, your call.
The first question you will normally get is: What is the lowest price you will take?
It is the same question the we will get, but now you have not got the Brokers commission to deal with and you the buyer think you are going to get a better deal?
So you have advertised your yacht at a lower price than you would have done than if you were using a Broker, so what do you say? You have allowed some wiggle room in your price (why do we have to play this game).
Oh! So your a Buyer, sorry, is the VAT paid, any liens on the vessel, is the same boat owned by 4 people all thinking they own it and unaware of the other three owners. (This has happened to us) Is it stolen, are the papers genuine????????? Is the vessel involved in a divorce dispute. Good luck!
BROKER FEES
Lets get a cunning plan together! If we are your Sole Broker and do not advertise your boat anywhere else we will Co-Sell the boat with youusing our resources to find a buyer and work together with you, and by doing it in house or working with leading Lawyers and Marine Documentation Companies throughout the world we can take care of the paperwork.
We can offer Marine Finance, Tax and marine legal advise, and registration through our associated companies for prospective buyers, where ever you are in the world.
We will advertise on Yachtworld, The Yachmarket and a whole host of Portals and Platforms on Social Media with more people than ever seeing. If you advertise your boat with a number of Brokers all that happens is that you get 2 or 3 adds appear on Yachtworld one on top of the other of your boat. Their trick is to advertise it slightly cheaper to get their add on top, but the Buyer often plays one Broker off against another....
We do not want to play these games anymore and you're the people to benefit! I want to practice being professional at being unprofessional! :)
If the boat is near you or you are living on board, we would rather co-broker with you! You send us the information, the photo's We find the buyer, you show them around, we handle the negotiation and the paperwork, job done!
So! How does this sound Charlie Brown? Sole Brokers only, Co-Brokering with you ONLY the Seller we work together selling your boat!
We do things differently, try harder, work harder, we cuss a lot, but we care about our customers. We don't know everything, if there is something we don't know, we will know someone that does!
Sure pay us the normal industry rate and we will do the same as everyone else, Co-Broker with everyone in our network, only we will do it better!
Contact us now, you know it makes sense!
We have had a great run up to the start of the Med season selling most of the brokerage boats listed, and desperate to get new listings on our books to cope with the demand for catamarans especially 45ft and below! Please if your looking to sell you boat whatever is, catamaran trimaran or monohull give us a chance to help you sell it!
VAT AND BREXIT
This has been a nightmare! With a lot of hearsay about what is going on it is difficult for Brits with their boats in the EU to really understand the status of their beloved boat in the mess that Brexit has caused. It you do have an issue we recommend contacting our marine legal advisors Ward McKenzie, who will tell you how it is and what you have to do to comply and make yourself legal in EU waters,
This ISARA 50 Must be one of the worlds best luxury catamarans in this size range.
If you are just going to purchase a Lagoon or similar for the same kind of price think twice Charlie Brown because this just knocks spots of anything you may have laid your eyes on. Easily more spacious than some 60 footers...
Worldwide Catamarans were the original Dealers for this promising range of catamarans and sadly only two were built and the other I believe suffered some extensive hurricane damage
The unique styling and space offered by stepping the mast on a carbon arch allowing the saloon to be pushed much farther forward grants an amazing large spacious saloon for the size of catamaran. Built at the well known TAYANA shipyard in Taiwan in 2014
I have know the owner of this catamaran for near on 20 years and if he hears a squeak or a rattle it drives him crazy. If it needs fixing its fixed, ha!
He constantly throws money at the boat and has to have the latest gadgets and kit. No expense is spared when it comes to the safety of his family and his beloved boat.
The owner has owned it for 4 years and there
Any lucky buyer that takes this catamaran of his hands will have something quite special. The owner is also willing to spend some time going through the systems of the boat and go sailing with you to make sure you are completely comfortable with all of the systems on board and hand the sails and manoeuvring with confidence, which is priceless for any buyer.
My only advice on this ISARA 50 is BUY IT, BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE DOES!!!
News coming soon of the new custom built BCY 68s by Jean Jacques Coste a real Gunboat Slayer in the making!
This is going to be spacious, sexy and fast......
Not to mention the ultimate custom design in power catamarans the (120ft) 40 meter originally designed for the marine projects group of a Luxury Sports Car Manufacturer also to be built at the BCY yard in Riga. So if you feel the need for speed, luxury and style that will blow everything else out of the water, then you need to speak to me!
Anyone prepared to help us with a demonstrator for an agreed period to exhibit at shows on either side of the Atlantic, we will put together a nice offer.
The fabulous new BCY 80
Many exciting new catamaran designs are now appearing on the market which will give the French production builders some competition and we are looking at a couple of designs that we are particularly excited about in the 40ft size region. We are looking at a few very interesting catamarans in the popular, but hard to come by 32 - 40 ft range, that not many builders seem to be producing these days. Keep an eye on our Facebook Page and website for the latest news and information.
